The university occupies an impressive 60-hectare site on the northern end of Clearwater Bay Peninsula at Tai Po Tsai.

Visa Information

Visitors to Hong Kong must hold a valid passport. Passports should be valid for at least six months after your planned departure date from Hong Kong. Nationals of most countries are not required to obtain visas for periods varying from seven days to six months, depending on nationality. Check the Hong Kong Immigration Department Visa and Entry Requirements to find out if you need a visa or Entry Permit, and how long you can stay in Hong Kong (http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/home.htm and http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm).

Getting to and from the Hong Kong Airport and Around Hong Kong

The most convenient mode of transportation to and from the Hong Kong Airport, as well as in and around Hong Kong, is by Taxi (http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/aguide/taxis.html).

Internet, Phone and Computer Access

Internet access is available throughout the HKUST campus. Participants may check their e-mail accounts using Telnet at many Computer Express Stations located throughout the campus. Wireless internet service is also available. Conferees who wish to use this service should have a laptop with a wireless card that is 802.11b or 802.11g compatible. A login password is required. Please check with the Conference Office onsite for login information.

Local (land-line) calls are free. Local calls from public coin phones cost HK$1 per five minutes. International Direct Dialing (IDD) service is available in the Conference Office, but an extra fee may be charged. Stored-value phone cards (available at most conveniences stores) allow you to make calls on (IDD) public coin and card phones. Mobile phone users: the GSM, PCS, CDMA and TDMA networks are available in Hong Kong.


Weather

Hong Kong enjoys a generally sub-tropical climate. Temperature ranges from 26°C to 33°C (78°F to 91°F). Humidity can rise above 86%. The Hong Kong Observatory (http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm) provides a useful 7 day forecast.

Recommended dress: Short sleeves and cotton or linen clothes are best. A light sweater or jacket for indoor use is a must as the air-conditioning tends to be very cold. An umbrella for the occasional rain shower is advisable. A hat for outdoor activities to protect against the sun is highly recommended.


Voltage

Electricity main supply voltages is 220 volts/frequency 50 Hz AC. Three-rectangular pin plugs are the norm. Foreign appliances may require an adapter.
